In January of 2012 I heard of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, a 2 day walk that covers 39 miles. I have been fortunate that it hasn’t affected the women in family, but I have friends whose mothers and aunts have been touched by it. When I walked in June of 2012 I did it on my own, but I walked with many others and made new friends. Avon requires it’s walkers to raise a minimum of $1,800. I remember thinking what I had gotten myself into, such a huge amount to raise, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to raise it, and even called the following day to tell them. They convinced me to stick it out and reassured me that I would be able to achieve this enormous task and I did. I was able to raise over $2,100! That year I didn’t walk the 39 miles, I walked a total of 26 miles in the 2 days, but this year I intend to walk the 39!
I walk for every woman who has been affected by Breast Cancer. I walk for myself, my mother, my sisters, my grandmothers, my aunts, my friends, and my nieces. It was such a beautiful experience when I walked the first time. Walking next to women who are survivors, I was surrounded by strong beautiful women! I remember a woman pushing her friend in a wheelchair. I was teary eyed a lot, I know I am a tough gal, but my gosh these women who are survivors, I can only describe them as Super Heroes!
The Chicago Avon Walk for Breast Cancer will be June 6-7th 2015. It is a week after my 1st Half Marathon. Since I don’t see myself running a Marathon just yet, this is the closest to that and it’s for such a great cause.
This time around I am going to be a Captain for my own team and I’m hoping a few of my friends will join me. The name I gave the team is “Pura Vida”. In English it translates to Pure Life. I got the name from a song and in Spanish I take it to mean you’re living to the fullest!
If you are interested in making a donation please do so here. I’m excited for this experience. I don’t do enough volunteering and I think that by doing this walk I am doing something good for others. I am making a positive contribution. Will you help me by making a contribution? If so thank you in advance!
